Insert and solder the switching power supply (which looks like a classic transistor.) into the U1 position You will have to bend the center pin back a little in order to insert it into the board. The flat side of the part faces down towards the tree trunk so that it looks like a bell hanging on the tree.  The bottom of the transistor will be about ⅛” from the circuit board.
